A month ago, I was contemplating scrapping WordPress MultiSite. I backed everything up one weekend, and then just kind of stalled out, hemming and hawing over actually pulling the plug. So I let it lie.
In that time, two things happened. First, WordPress had another update. Then, my host decided the server I and my other “shared” hosting people were on, was dying, and they needed to move us to a new server.
And like magic, everything that was plaguing my sites (have several hosted there), just vanished. The spotty behavior of how things ran in general, I blame on the old server. The trouble I had even accessing my WPMS install by anything other than one of the sub-sites, I blame on WP’s previous version. According to the blurb at WP’s site, “This maintenance release fixes 34 bugs in 3.9, including numerous fixes for multisite networks…” Makes me wonder if the issue I had, happened to be one of those. Because really, if I recall, it didn’t start to happen until after upgrading past the last version of 3.8.
And after looking at their bug tracker… Yep, it was this one: https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/27927 Since I didn’t have my WPMS install set up to forward visitors to a sign up page, it would simply reload to the main www domain if I tried to access my dashboard from there. At some point I finally figured out I could get in via one of the “client” sub-domains I had set up, since they’re all mine. That is the point where I put off doing anything more drastic. I kind of lost interest in pursuing it any further, but I guess that worked out okay. I’m really glad I didn’t go ahead with tearing it all down.
Ironically, as I write this…. my sites went down. Well, only to me, apparently. *sigh* Every time this has happened in the past it is due to the server firewalls at my host blocking my IP address, typically after it has changed, which it tends to do now and then. And almost always it happens after I’ve already logged into WordPress to do something, then just like that, everything stops loading for any of my domains. But if I check it over my phone’s data connection, they load fine. Nice “feature”, eh? Annoying, more like. So I’ve got a ticket open for that while I continue to type this up in a text editor on my computer.
So what else is happening? Not much really. I don’t know if I mentioned it before, but I changed jobs at my employer recently. Salaried now, at about the same pay as I was getting before with a couple hours of overtime each week, but a definite change of pace and scenery. More risk of doing some serious damage to the company’s network if I am not careful… so I’m being quite cautious with anything that is being given to me.
I recently, and finally, after a very long time, went to the dentist. I’ve a huge anxiety about dental work in general, thanks to a 3x extraction of baby teeth in jr. high before getting braces. Yep, I still had baby teeth in jr. high that didn’t come out on their own. My teeth were slow to grow. Anyway, after the braces came off, I never went back, until a couple weeks ago. I won’t say how long that actually was. But apparently I was doing pretty well with the brushing, they only saw two cavities that needed to be filled, recommended my only two (yes, TWO – I never had all four) wisdom teeth be extracted… and then after redoing an x-ray, they saw an infection in one of my lateral incisors that needed to be addressed before the wisdom teeth extractions. So this past week I had my first ever root canal. I guess it had been a while since it started though, as there was calcification around the infection… that tooth has been discolored for as long as I can recall, so I wasn’t too shocked at that. I just hope the medicine they packed in it for now will do its job and get rid of the calcification so I don’t have to have more serious surgery to get the infection out. I’m also on a round of antibiotics, and have an antibiotic rinse regimen to follow. That rinse leaves everything tasting nasty, ALL. DAY. LONG. Seriously. Even water tastes gross right now, and I drink quite a bit of it.
Oh look, they fixed my issue already! “Too many connections” from my IP. Seriously? I logged into WP, and I logged into Cpanel. Just a bit ridiculous if you ask me.
Well, maybe with my WPMS install working again and my server behaving much better – IP blocking aside – I’ll get around to finally finishing that design I was working on for my site and do a reveal by June maybe. We’ll see.
Oh, and one last thing. I’m turning another year older this weekend. And the answer to that is, 29. The answer is always 29.
